No matter the season—spring through autumn—or whether you’re fishing lakes or small alpine streams, there’s a dry fly in this particular selection that will get the job done. A quick look at streamside vegetation and spider webs can give valuable clues about the insects fish are feeding on.
Patterns like the Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator, and Royal Wulff are excellent all-round searching flies, effective on rivers and streams throughout the day. When mayflies are hatching, classics such as the Adams, Irresistible, and March Brown come into their own.
During summer, beetle-style patterns like the Humpy and Red Tag are deadly for prospecting, while a black ant pattern is a standout choice on stormy or unsettled days.
