Diving masks are made for one obvious purpose, to allow you to see clearly underwater. Although all the diving masks available at Tackle World Adelaide Metro allow you to see underwater clearly, we sell masks that are optimised for specific diving activities including spearfishing, freediving, scuba and snorkelling.
It is important to choose a mask that is water-tight and comfortable to wear. Ensuring the mask seals around your face well and does not impair your vision are also imperative factors when purchasing a dive mask. The above points are essential, however the are many other features that you should consider when purchasing a dive mask.
The first thing to consider is the material of the mask’s skirt. Silicone is the most popular and best material for a dive mask as silicone conforms to your face, creating a comfortable and water-tight seal. Siltex and plastic are the other materials you may come across when deciding on a dive mask. Although cheaper, they do not perform as well as silicone as they are less comfortable and more likely to leak. Siltex and plastic masks may also cause face rashes, so they are best to avoid if possible.
The colour of your mask’s skirt also has its pros and cons. Clear skirts are good for allowing in more light and it enhances your peripheral vision. Black skirts block reflective light and are a popular choice for spearfishing.
The mask’s frame is also worth considering. There are two types – framed and frameless masks. A framed mask is the traditional type which offers a stable and secure fit. Frameless masks sit closer to your eyes giving you a wider field of view.
The mask’s lens is important too, as the goal is to find a mask that has a good field of view whilst remaining comfortable. Single lens masks offer great field of view; however, they are heavier than double lens masks. Twin/double lens masks are lighter, are usually lower volume and position closer to your eyes, which can also increase your field of view. Teardrop shaped masks allow you to look downward better, making it easier to see, access, and use your gear.
