Wetsuits trap a small amount of water against your skin which your body heat will warm-up, resulting in keeping you warm while in the water. Not only will wetsuits keep the heat in, but they also prevent the sun’s UV rays from damaging your skin; plus the added buoyancy of a wetsuit will allow for faster swimming. Most wetsuits made for spearfishing will have camouflage patterns, adding stealth to your arsenal whilst hunting underwater.
There are a few different types of wetsuits commonly used while spearfishing which include 1-piece wetsuits, 2-piece wetsuits, and lycra suits. 1-piece wetsuits are the most durable, best value for money, and come in a range of thicknesses for a range of water temperatures. 2-piece wetsuits or open-cell suits are the best choice for serious divers. Although prone to damage, with the right care open-cell suits keep divers warmer, drag less in the water due to the smooth exterior and they’re the most flexible and comfortable wetsuit underwater. Open-cell suits also come in a range of thicknesses. Lycra suits are not made to insulate heat as well as neoprene suits but they do offer good UV protection and offer faster swimming speeds. Lycra suits are best suited to warm water and tropical environments.
